What led you to launch Kershaw Consulting?
I've spent about 10 years working within SMEs, alongside a few larger businesses, across a range of sectors. I started out running customer success teams, then moved into project management because I wanted to fix some of the root causes behind the same issues cropping up repeatedly. That led me into data warehousing and eventually manufacturing, where I was an operations director leading around 80 staff.
It's been a real SME story of wearing lots of different hats and learning new things every day to keep all the plates spinning. I've worked on acquisitions, company culture projects and manufacturing transformation programmes. Throughout all of that, the common thread was building systems, growing teams and helping businesses move from pen-and-paper processes to having dashboards that allow owners to make data-led decisions.
The downside of working with fast-growing SMEs is that they don't stay SMEs forever. As businesses grow, roles change. For me, launching Kershaw Consulting was about stepping away from directorship and getting back involved at the coalface, where the magic happens.
What are the most common challenges you encounter?
The reality is that systems aren't particularly exciting or sexy, so people tend to stick with tools and processes for as long as they can get away with. If something works, there's a psychological safety in keeping it. But businesses don't grow by standing still.
Sometimes it's complacency, sometimes it's fear of change, and sometimes it's simply that business owners don't know what alternatives are available. They're busy running their company and don't have time to keep up with new technology, new methodologies or better ways of working.
It's the classic challenge of working in the business rather than on the business. You don't always get the chance to lift your head up and ask what everyone else is doing or what lessons you can learn from others - I give business owners the bandwidth to do just that.
